Just in time for Christmas: A Digital Tax-Free Shopping App That Saves You A Lot of Money!
With the holiday season fast approaching, many Belgian expats are likely to come to visit family and friends across the country. With that in mind, we would like to tell all VIW members and associates about a new smartphone app which could save you a lot of money before you fly back home as well as an exclusive, limited time offer.
The new app is called Refundit and they have teamed up with the Belgian government to provide anyone residing outside the EU, a quick and easy way to get VAT refunds on their shopping.
Many people know that if you come to visit Belgium and purchase almost any merchandise, you’re entitled to get back 21 percent of the sticker price, assuming you leave the country without using the goods. That represents the Value Added Tax (VAT) on most items (chocolates and books are less). The problem has always been that it’s a big hassle to even file a claim.
Often, one has to fill out complicated forms and get special receipts that only certain stores provide. In addition, you need to get to the airport early, find the customs counter and, assuming its even open at the time of your flight, stand in line and hand in your refund request. To add insult to injury, the agencies who handle the process take an exorbitant fee of up to 60 percent of your refund. The end result is that most people don’t even bother to ask for the money they have coming to them.
Refundit changes all of that. First of all, the app makes the entire process digital. All you have to do is take a picture of the receipts while you’re still in the store and save them on your phone. Once you’ve done all of your shopping, you can file the claim without any additional paperwork or standing on long lines at the airport.
Refundit also saves you more money. First, because it accepts receipts from any store selling refundable merchandise and, more importantly, it only takes a 9% fee from the total refund amount. Much less than anyone else in the industry. That means a bigger refundit for you!
So how does it work? It’s simple. Once you upload your receipts to the app, you need to check into your flight online, take a picture of your passport and upload it, along with your digital boarding pass, at least eight hours before your flight. That’s all you need to do.
If there are any questions about your request, you might be asked to stop by the customs counter but chances are your refund will be approved digitally on the spot. After that, you’ll have to choose how you want to get your money back. If you pick the credit card option, you’ll be credited within 15 minutes and you’re done!
You do need to make sure that all the receipts and travel documents are clear, legible and show all of the necessary information. Under Belgian law, each receipt must total at least 50 Euro. Also, you need to be flying out of the through Brussels International Airport which is where the Refundit system is operational.
For a limited time, Refundit is offering a special 10 Euro bonus on the first approved VAT request per customer. This offer expires on January 7th, 2020.
So what do you have to do? First thing to do is download the app from the App store or on Google Play
